Balochi Poetry: History, Themes and 7 Great Poets You Should Know

For the Baloch people, poetry is the highest form of literature. For hundreds of years, before Balochi was commonly written down, poems carried the history of the tribes, the stories of heroes, the pain of lovers and the wisdom of elders. Even today, a good Balochi poem can silence a whole gathering.

Balochi poetry – open book and quill

In this post we take a journey through the history of Balochi poetry, from the ancient war ballads to modern free verse, and meet some of the greatest Balochi poets you should know.

A Poetry Kept Alive by Memory

For most of its history, Balochi poetry was oral. It was not written in books but memorised and performed. Special performers kept it alive:

  • Pahlawan: professional bards who sang the long heroic epics about wars, ancestors and tribal history.
  • Sawti: performers of romantic songs and love lyrics.
  • Gwashinda: ordinary people who sang and recited poetry without being professionals.

Poems were sung at weddings, gatherings and around the fire at night, usually with music. This is why Balochi poetry and Balochi music are so closely connected. Many of the singers we love today are still carrying poems from one generation to the next.

Types of Balochi Poetry

Balochi poetry includes many different forms:

  • Heroic and epic ballads about the early wars and the settlement of the Baloch tribes.
  • Tribal ballads about later battles between tribes.
  • Romantic ballads telling famous love stories.
  • Love songs and lyrics, sometimes written as a conversation between two lovers.
  • Religious and moral poems that teach wisdom and good behaviour.
  • Short poems, including lullabies for children and rhyming riddles.

Some classical war poems are even written as a direct speech from one hero to his rival, which makes them feel almost like a play.
